The project story
This decorative overlay was more than 20 years old. It had naturally lost some of its original appearance and needed maintenance, but the decorative finish itself had held up well enough to preserve.
Rather than covering or replacing it, the existing surface was refurbished and resealed. The goal was to renew what was already there instead of discarding a decorative system that was still worth keeping.
Why this project matters
This project is evidence of the value of maintenance over time. Decorative concrete does not have to be treated as disposable when the underlying work is still sound enough to renew.
It also reinforces an important DCOSL principle: the first question is not always “what new coating should go here?” Sometimes the better question is whether the existing surface can be preserved.
The finished surface
The finished photograph shows the renewed brick-pattern overlay in the setting it was designed for: a covered porch with white columns, planting beds and a wood entry door.
